Learning Goals#

  • You can explain the criteria that define a functional association between genes.

  • You understand how the function of an unknown gene may be predicted by data from different input channels. You can provide examples of such channels and how the information from different channels can be integrated into a prediction score for functional associations.

  • You can assess the advantages and disadvantages of using different types of information from genomes (phylogenetic profiles, gene neighborhood, gene fusions) to study functional associations between genes.

  • You can explain the advantages of “functional class scoring” over “overrepresentation analysis”.

  • You understand how to use ‘STRING’ to check for pathway enrichment on the results.
